What to expect at your first osteopathy appointment
If you're booking your first osteopathy appointment in Cirencester, it's completely normal to feel unsure about what will happen. At The Osteopathic Hub, your first visit is designed to be clear, thorough and supportive.
Your osteopath will begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and any concerns you may have. This helps us understand the full picture of your pain or discomfort — whether it’s recent, long-standing, related to work, pregnancy, sport or daily habits.
Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession in the UK, and your consultation will always be carried out to professional clinical standards in a calm and respectful environment.
How your osteopath will assess you
Your first appointment includes a detailed assessment to help identify what may be causing your symptoms.
This may involve:
-
Discussion of your symptoms and medical history
-
Postural and movement assessment
-
Examination of the area causing pain
-
Testing mobility, strength and tension
-
Orthopaedic or neurological checks if needed
-
Blood pressure or basic health checks where appropriate
You may be asked to remove some outer clothing so the osteopath can assess movement and areas of concern. You are welcome to bring shorts, a vest or comfortable clothing if you prefer. Your comfort and consent are always prioritised.
Osteopaths sometimes assess areas away from where you feel pain, as the source of a problem may be elsewhere in the body.
All information shared is confidential and handled in line with UK healthcare standards and General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) guidance.

Will I receive treatment on the first visit?
In most cases, yes.
If appropriate and safe to do so, treatment often begins during the first appointment. Techniques may include gentle hands-on treatment, joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, stretching and advice on movement or exercises.
Occasionally, your osteopath may recommend further tests or advise speaking with your GP before starting treatment. If so, this will always be clearly explained.
Some patients feel mild soreness after treatment, similar to post-exercise discomfort. This usually settles within 24–48 hours.

How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on:
-
How long symptoms have been present
-
The nature of the condition
-
Your daily activities and lifestyle
-
Your goals for recovery
Some patients attend for short-term pain relief, while others choose ongoing care for long-term support, posture or injury prevention. Your osteopath will discuss a treatment plan with you so you know what to expect.
Common questions before your first visit
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with an osteopath in the UK without a referral.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing is ideal. You may be asked to remove outer layers for assessment, but you can bring shorts or a t-shirt if preferred.
Is osteopathy safe?
Yes. Osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council and trained to recognise when treatment is appropriate or when referral is needed.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, you are welcome to bring a friend, partner or parent if it helps you feel more comfortable.
Will treatment hurt?
Most techniques are gentle. Some areas may feel tender if already painful, but treatment is always adapted to your comfort.
How long does the first appointment last?
The first appointment usually lasts 45–60 minutes and often includes assessment and initial treatment. Follow-ups are shorter.
